The International Union of Operating Engineers, Stationary Local 39, SMUD Board Member Bill Slayton, Roseville City School District Board Member Rene Aguilera, and the Town & Country Democratic Club are among recent endorsements for AD5 candidate Larry Miles.
Stationary Engineers Local 39 Backs Larry
The Stationary Engineers Local 39 announced their endorsement of Democrat Larry Miles for the 5th Assembly District today. “We are proud to join a broad base of supporters in endorsing Larry for AD5,” said Joan Bryant, Director of Public Employees. “Larry has the experience and ability to win AD5 and help get California and Californians working again.”
“We admire Larry’s passion and support for public education and especially appreciate that he has lived in AD5 for over 23 years serving his community in a variety of settings,” Bryant added. “Throughout his public service career he has demonstrated integrity and thoughtfulness and has been a consistent, strong advocate for working men and women.”
"Local 39's support is huge," Larry said. "I am grateful to Joan Bryant and Local 39 for their confidence in me, and I honor their zealous representation of working families in our community."
The International Union of Operating Engineers (IUOE), Stationary Local No. 39 is a progressive, diversified union that represents more than 22,000 workers across Northern Nevada and Northern California.
SMUD Board Member Bill Slayton Endorses
Bill Slayton, SMUD Board Member and community leader, also announced his support for Larry last week. "I am thrilled to receive Bill's support. He is a long-term leader in our community, a leader on energy issues, and a business leader. He has given generously to our community, and is a big reason why the citizens of Sacramento enjoy the benefits of a well run public utility."
Slayton joins his SMUD Board colleagues Larry Carr and Nancy Bui, Co-Chairperson of Larry's Assembly Campaign with San Juan School Board President Rick Launey, iin endorsing Larry for AD5.
Town & Country Democratic Club Goes With Larry
The Town & Country Democratic Club also announced its support for Larry. "The Town & Country's support is especially meaningful to me as my home Democratic Club," Larry added. "With the leadership of people like T&C President Margie Metzler and VP Arnie Godmintz, T&C is a major reason why we have grown Democratic capacity in AD5."
"I have been involved in Democratic grass roots politics for almost 40 years so I am especially honored to receive the support of such committed activists," Larry concluded.
The T&C Club joins another active Democratic club, the Sacramento Womens Democratic Club, in endorsing Larry.
Civic Leaders and Democratic Activists For Larry
A host of civic leaders and Democratic activists have joined Larry in his campaign. Roseville City School District Rene Aguilera endorsed Larry last week, as did voter registration activist Eric Rivera. "Rene Aguilera is a thoughtful leader on so many issues, but we share a particular passion for supporting public education as school board members," Larry observed. "Rene knows how hard I've worked to support kids and learning in my service as a San Juan Board of Education member, and I thank him for his endorsement." Miles has served as a member of the San Juan Unified Board of Education since 2004, twice winning election and serving two terms as Board President.
Latino Democratic Club voter registration Chair Erick Rivera also joined in endorsing Larry. "I am excited that you are running as the Democratic candidate for State Assembly District 5 and I fully endorse your candidacy," Erick said.
"Erick has helped lead a team of dedicated Democrats in registering over 5,000 new voters in AD5, and the entire state owes them a debt of gratitude for changing the tide in this critically important Assembly seat," Larry observed.
Larry took out his nomination papers for AD5 today. "I have always been passionate about public service. My dad was an Air Force sergeant for 23 years who served his country and my mother was a nurse for over 60 years, including 40 years as an Emergency Room nurse. I am of the age that heard with my own ears the public service appeals of John F. Kennedy, Robert Kennedy, Cesar Chavez, and Martin Luther King and I took those appeals to heart. With this in mind, I am honored to take this next step and have the chance to serve the 5th Assembly District.
Larry continues to garner broad-based support and endorsements from throughout AD5. In the last 10 days, Larry has earned the endorsements of the Sacramento Hispanic Chamber of Commerce, the Sacramento Women's Democratic Club, and a host of Democratic activitsts.
Hispanic Chamber Endorsement
"I enjoyed visiting with these creative entrepreneurs and business people and discussing the importance of creating jobs, improving our economy, supporting public education, and making California great again," Larry said of his Hispanic Chamber endorsement. "Their support continues to demonstrate that my candidacy enjoys tremendous broad-based support from throughout our community."
Larry noted that the first Hispanic business person he ever knew was his grandfather, Juan Perales, a carpenter. "The Hispanic Chamber's endorsement means a lot to me," Larry said.
Sacramento Women Dems Support Larry
Larry also was endorsed by the Sacramento Women's Democratic Club this week after members heard from both Larry and his opponent. "I have worked for issues important to women and men like public education, Title IX, and family friendly policies for over three decades," Larry observed. Larry has supported many women candidates over the years, starting with flying Cathy O'Neil for Secretary of State across California as a 19 year old pilot to voting to hire the first woman Superintendent in history for the San Juan School District. He has also fought to get equal rights for women to play sports under Title IX, and coached young women in softball, soccer, and basketball for years.
"One of my first campaign events last year was organized by my daughter," Larry recalled. "Katherine was inspired by Hillary Clinton's campaign for President, and I am proud that I can tell her today that the Sacramento Women Dems endorsed me."
Democratic Activists Go for Larry
Democratic activists continue to step forward to turn AD5 blue by backing Larry. Democratic Central Committee members Kerri Asbury and Ann Wangberg endorsed Larry last week, along with Eric Rivera. Both Kerri and Ann wear a lot of other activists hats in addition to their Central Committee chores, and Eric recently participated in the historic AD5 voter registration effort that recently added 5,400 Democrats to the roll. "As someone who has been involved in grassroots Democratic efforts for almost 40 years, I am respectful of their hard work and honor their support," Larry said.
AD5 is now a Democratic seat. The latest numbers indicate that 97, 360 Democrats are registered versus 95,134 Republicans (38.96% vs. 38.07%). There are a substantial number of independents and other registered voters, 57,404 (22.97%). The marked increase in Democratic voters promises to make AD5 a key battleground race in this election cycle.
Larry Miles has announced his candidacy for the 5th Assembly District.
"I'm running as one Californian who wants to help make this state great again," Larry said. "We need to get through these historically challenging times. To do that we need to work together."
A Trustee of the San Juan Unified School District, one of the largest school districts in the state, Larry noted his commitment to public education. "I know first hand that public education is the very foundation of what makes this the incredible nation that it is."
Larry also acknowledged California's dysfunctional state government. "I think there are good and decent people who are trying their best to do what they think is right in the Capitol," Larry observed. "But we have a system that's broken. We need systemic improvements to make our state government functional."
"However, we also need people who want to make it work," he continued. "We need problem solvers not political ideologues," Larry continued. "I think the public is tired of old political rhetoric; I believe they want help; they want results."
